Massac Co. – Three are dead as the result of an eight-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on westbound I-24 in Metropolis. According to a release from the Illinois State Police, at around 12:30 yesterday afternoon, traffic had forced seven vehicles to either slow down or come to a complete stop in the westbound lane near milepost 37 when a semi failed to slow down and struck the line of vehicles, causing a chain reaction crash. Troopers responded to the crash at about 12:40. Of the 13 people involved, three were killed, six were taken to area hospitals due to injury and four were uninjured. ISP says identification of the three fatalities will be held until family members are notified by the Massac County Coroner. The crash remains under investigation.
