WHITE CO. – The White County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of scam attempts during the past week involving the Social Security Administration.
According to White County Sheriff Doug Maier, several sources said the caller is from Social Security requesting personal information and threatening to involve the Internal Revenue Service and local law enforcement if information isn’t shared. Caller ID has shown local numbers on some calls.
Maier said his assumption is that the increase in scam attempts is due to COVID-19 restrictions and more time at home, adding the caller will be relentless, calling 30 to 40 times a day.
He advised to not share any information out over the phone and not call numbers they may share.
Contact local law enforcement if you feel you have been a victim of a scam.
