Mt. Vernon Couple Dead After Head-On Collision on IL 161

CENTRAILIA – A Mt. Vernon couple was killed in a head-on, two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on Illinois Route 161 east of Centralia near the Byars Road intersection.

According to Illinois State Police, 74-year-old Carolyn Marlow of Mt. Vernon was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, 79-year-old Logan Marlow, when their vehicle was struck head on by a vehicle driven by 56-year-old John Hermeling of Centralia after he lost control and crossed the center line.

Carolyn Marlow was declared dead at the scene, while her husband was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hermeling was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and cited for improper lane usage.
