Investigation Continues into Deadly I-57 Hit-and-Run

BENTON – Illinois State Police continue to investigate a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened early Friday morning on I-57 near Benton.

A preliminary investigation showed that an unknown vehicle was directly behind a 2006 Hyundai Electra driven by 70-year-old James J. Bean of West Frankfort on northbound I-57 at milepost 69.5 when the vehicle struck the rear of Bean’s car.

Bean lost control and left the roadway to the right and was ejected when his car overturned. Bean was pronounced dead at the scene. The unknown vehicle did not stop and left the scene.

If anyone has information on the incident, police asked to call ISP Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 7 at 618-250-7601.
