GORHAM – Officials with the U.S. Forest Service said vehicles traveling along Illinois 3 in the Gorham area should exercise caution as they drive through drifting smoke and when encountering emergency vehicles as firefighters continue battling a wildfire that started Tuesday afternoon in the Fountain Bluff area of the Shawnee National Forest.
Officials said the fire has consumed 27 acres and was expected to grow slightly due to high winds Wednesday.
Firefighters are working to protect themselves and the public, natural and cultural resources, infrastructure and private property.
The Federal Aviation Administration has placed a temporary flight restriction for the area to protect firefighting aircraft. All non-fire aviation, including unmanned aircraft (drones), are prohibited.
