Several food pantries in southern Illinois will now be able to keep perishable donations longer, thanks in part to Ameren Illinois, which recently donated 26 Energy Star upright convertible refrigerator/freezers to pantries across its service area.
Ameren Illinois Community Relations Executive Tina Gibbs the idea came after hearing of places that were having to turn away donations due to a lack of equipment to store the food. She said more than 100 agencies applied for help.
God’s House of Blessings in McClure, Feed My Sheep Ministries of Mt. Vernon, The Table in Vienna, Faith Liberty Mission Church Food Pantry from Du Quoin, Bethel Temple Evangelistic Ministries out of Mounds, and Whiteash Foodbank in Marion were among the 26 total pantries that received a convertible fridge/freezer.
Based on the response, Gibbs added there is a “good chance they will do this again later this year.”
