A new study shows that Illinois’ unemployment claims are 18.28% lower than pre-COVID levels.
As businesses reopen and enhanced unemployment benefits end, Illinoisans are going back to work. Jill Gonzalez of WalletHub said that since March 2020, unemployment claims have decreased significantly.
“The expiration of extra unemployment benefits should help reduce unemployment,” she said. “Some people were making more money while unemployed, but that will no longer be the case.”
Gonzalez said that the unemployment numbers are now closer to where they were almost 10 years ago.
Illinois currently ranks 9th on the WalletHub list of states to recover the quickest post-pandemic.
