(The Center Square) – An animal rights group is applauding an Illinois congressman’s crusade against illegal animal fighting shipments through the U.S. mail.
Congressman Mike Quigley has been joined by three dozen other members of Congress in asking the U.S. Postal Service to crack down on the animal shipments.
Marty Irby, executive director of Animal Wellness Action, said an investigation showed the banned sport of cockfighting is alive and well. He said cockfighting could be a recipe for disaster in spreading other diseases.
Police busted up a cockfighting ring in Belvidere, Illinois last summer.
