Authorities Working to Identify Victim in Mt. Vernon House Fire

MT. VERNON – Jefferson County authorities are working to identify a man found dead Tuesday morning in a house fire in Mt. Vernon.

According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, dental records are being used to determine the man’s identity.

Mt. Vernon firefighters found the man’s body while they were working to put out the fire in the 1500 block of Jones Street.

They had been alerted to the possibility of finding a person in the home after a man now identified as George Herrington was found lying on the ground outside the home and he told them someone could still be inside.

Herrington said he woke up and found flames inside the home. He was initially transported to a Mt. Vernon hospital before being airlifted to a Springfield burn unit.

The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 4:30 Tuesday morning. It is deemed a total loss.

The State Fire Marshal continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
