Lawmakers Tackle ‘Organized Retail Theft’ With New Bill

(IOCI RADIO) – Legislation cracking down on organized retail theft made it out of the spring session.

The bill defines organized retail crime in state law, gives prosecutors the jurisdiction to pursue criminals in other counties and requires online marketplaces to verify a seller’s identity before listing large volumes of items.

Sen. Steve McClure of Springfield said it “doesn’t go far enough.”

Supporters said the measure is needed to get to the root of organized retail theft, which is often linked to gangs, drugs and human trafficking.

The bill awaits Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature.
