JEFFERSON COUNTY – Just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jefferson County 9-1-1 received calls reporting a structure fire in rural southwest Jefferson County.

The caller reported an attached garage on fire with smoke and fire visible.

A full still was called, with Woodlawn, Waltonville, Mt. Vernon and Jefferson firefighters responding, along with Litton Ambulance Service.

The incident was ultimately raised to a box level call, which also brought Centralia City, Sesser, and Kell firefighters to the scene, while Centralia and Wayne Fire Protection provided station coverage at the Woodlawn station.

Upon their arrival, firefighters found a 24 x 40 foot pole barn fully engulfed with fire in an attached breezeway and fire showing from the roof of the house. A resident who was home at the time confirmed that no one was inside the home.

An attack on the flames in the breezeway stopped the blaze with only minimal fire damage to one side of the home.

Crews remained on scene for a little over 2.5 hours doing overhaul and making sure that there were no hot spots left.

As the scene was calming, a large smoke column was noticed directly north of the fire scene. Irvington, Woodlawn, and Wayne fire protection districts responded to find a tractor that was fully engulfed. Irvington and Woodlawn handled the tractor fire and Wayne FPD moved up to the original fire scene.

No injuries were reported at either scene, and the Office of State Fire Marshal Arson Division is investigating.
