MT. VERNON – A Friday afternoon semi rollover on Interstate 64 west of Mt. Vernon caused traffic backups in town as motorists were diverted into town.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard, deputies responded to the crash on I-64 but Illinois State Police ultimately handled the incident.

Bullard says traffic from the interstate was detoured onto Highways 15 and 37 while ISP was handling the crash on the interstate. The additional traffic combined with the standard lunch hour traffic had both highways significantly backed up during the noon hour.

Bullard says the driver of the semi that rolled over on the interstate was out of the truck upon their arrival and was uninjured.
