MT. VERNON – An early Sunday morning fire that heavily damaged a vacant Mt. Vernon home is being called suspicious.

According to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, flames were shooting from the home at the corner of South 19th and Logan Street when they arrived around 1:30 a.m.

Flames destroyed the upstairs of the home while the bottom floor suffered both fire and heavy smoke damage. The City had earlier condemned the home.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing and the fire has been deemed suspicious, as there were no utilities to the home.

Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid at the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon main fire station in the event of another call.

No injuries were reported.
