MARION – Two elderly people were rescued from their burning home in Marion Tuesday morning.

According to the Marion Fire Department, firefighters responded just before 10:30 a.m. to the fire at 701 N. Vicksburg.

While on their way to the fire, firefighters were told that two elderly people were still inside.

When firefighters arrived, they found the back garage fully engulfed with fire. The back of the home was also heavily involved and extended into the attic space.

Firefighters entered the front of the home with heavy smoke conditions and began rescue efforts. Firefighters quickly located and removed both victims and continued attacking the fire. No additional victims were located.

The rescued victims were treated on scene by paramedics. They both refused any further treatment.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Marion Fire Department. No further information is available at this time.

The fire department was assisted by the Marion Police Department, Herrin Fire Department, United Ambulance, Ameren, and the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal.
