MT. VERNON – There will be a community prayer for peace, comfort and for all the families suffering from the deadly shooting that happened early Sunday morning in the 600 block of South 15th Street in Mt. Vernon tonight. It will start at 6:30 at The Commons across from the courthouse in Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon Police say two people died – 20-year-old Zomarrius Williams of Mt. Vernon and 26-year-old Demonta Woodward of Mounds. Another person – 22-year-old Jerria J. Smith of Mt. Vernon – was arrested and charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Obstructing Justice. Several people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken by ambulance or privately to local hospitals. Five more victims received treatment for gunshot-related injuries.

Police say more arrests and charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
