MT. VERNON – Attorneys in the case accusing a 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man of reckless homicide in connection with the death last summer of 18-year-old Courtney Estes, who was a pedestrian, have confirmed the case is ready to head to jury trial next week.

Mitchell Sharp is scheduled to be in court Tuesday for a final pretrial hearing in the case charging him with not only reckless homicide, but also failure to report a crash involving death, three counts aggravated DUI causing death, improper traffic lane usage, and driving on a suspended license.

Sharp was reportedly driving west on Main Street, when he ran off the road, struck Estes – who was a pedestrian on the sidewalk – and then crashed into a home in the 600 block of Main Street.

Estes, a 2023 graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Allison Harris.

Sharp has been found mentally fit to stand trial after a bona fide doubt had earlier been raised.

Sharp was reportedly naked when he fled on foot from the crash scene.

The doubt surrounding his mental fitness was raised in court a few months after the crash and a fitness evaluation was ordered.

The case is set for a jury trial next Tuesday.
